This article provides context for the introduction and efficacy of the Eliminate the Wait plan initiated by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Judicial Commission on Mental Health. By highlighting individual stories of Texans struggling to understand their place on the waitlist for state hospitals, different groups across the mental health and criminal justice spectrum are encouraged to refer to the tooklit to better divert impacted people to assistance before they get caught in the justice system.
